Hi, I have a '78 Ford E150 van. I was wondering how to tell what gear ratio is in the rear axle? Also I was wondering if this is for sure a 9" rearend?Thanks----Tom
This is a way to get your ratio without counting the teeth. I personally used it and then had it checked at a rearend shop and it's dead-on. I learned it from this site, so here you go. It will greatly help to have two people when doing this.
You basicly are going to turn 1 rear tire 20 times and count how many times the driveshaft turned. Thats it! If the D/S turns 35 times you have a 3.5:1 ratio. Mine turned 24 full turns and almost 3/4 of another turn it was a 2.47:1 demon. My front Dana 44 had the stock 3.5:1 so it turned 35 times exactly.
You can identify the 9" axle by it's welded-on rear cover and removeable 3rd member housing section that comes out the front of the main axle housing (where the driveshaft connects).
Yes, if the tag is still on it after all these years, you should find the ratio there. Look for the tag under one of the bolts that go around the 3rd member housing.
