tachometer

Hello Group,
I am new to this forum and very exctied to have found it. I have a 1997 F-150 4.2 V-6, standard trans w/ 108000 miles. Basic upgrades, exaust, intake, used to have a chip.

Main question... I have added a tach and was told that I needed to solder the wire that gives the rpm info to the tach to a pin in the computer. Easy enough, but I have forgotten which pin to solder it to and was also wondering if anyone has had the same information given to them and tried it before I blow up my computer.

Second, I purchased a chip for the truck and with a standard trans I did not notice much gain if any. Later the truck started to die on me periodically. Sometimes a couple times a day. I took the chip out and all is well??? Any info.

Thank you in advance.

Joshua

I'm not sure about the tachometer question. Was the chip burned for your truck's computer?

re tachometer/superchip

The chip was a superchip and was installed at the placed I purchased it at. It ran fine for three years and then the truck started to die as I was driving down the road. After looking at serveral different reasons this may occur, I decieded to take the chip out and all was good???

I do not know if it was specifically "burned" for my truck, but the sticker on the box tated it was for a 1997 4.2 liter?

Well, if I were you I'd ask Ken this questions in the chips forum...he will no doubt have an answer or explanation, and he can get you a MUCH better chip than that 3 year old SC.

I didn't realize you had the chip for three years. Obviously if it ran fine for three years, it was originally burned for your truck's particular computer. If the truck ran fine after you removed the chip, I would see about having the chip tested.

I think its PIN 48, but I will have to check. You dont need to solder anything, just use one of those quick piggyback wire connector things.

I also believe it is pin 48.

there is also a wire in the middle harness behind the dash cluster. I think it's pink/white. Use the search tool of this forum and you will find it posted sometime back.

Lots of people ask this question and that old post always does the job.

Supposedly there is also a wire (maybe green) on the coilpack that will also work
