Cruise Control Fire 2001 Explorer
It appears as though it is the same recall that Ford has going with the Expeditions and the 2001 F-150 trucks. (hubby drives one of these and is having the cruise unhooked Monday until it can be replaced)
I was traveling on a highway when I heard a "pop" and had white smoke billowing out of my steering column. I immmeditately pulled over and shut everything off since I realized I had an electrical fire. The mechanic who is fixing my vehicle showed me where the cruise control cable had been pinched off over time and how this had started the electrical fire. My insurance co., State Farm, sent an insurance adjuster to view the damage and make a report. I've also contacted Ford Motor Co and an engineer is to be contacting me this week for more info.
I started having backup lights problems about 4-6 weeks before this happened. They are on the same cable as the cruise control for your info. I also had the speedometer and the temperature gauges start jumping around the day prior to the incident. I was taking it to my local mechanic when the problem occurred.
