speedometer cable to speedo attachment?

On my '64, I can't get my speedometer cable to stay attached to the speedometer. It keeps on popping off. The back of the speedometer is threaded while the end of the cable is just smooth.

Is there supposed to be a set screw? Or is my speedometer cable incorrect? If it is incorrect, is there any way to keep what I have and keep it attached? (I am trying to stay on a budget on some of these small things (haha) so I have something left to take care of the bigger issues.)

thanks

It should be threaded. Does it have a plastic or metal end? THe plastic ones have a clip that you push sideways for it to lock on, but your truck should have a threaded end to go on the speedo.

It's a metal end. Is there any way to replace just the end?
Thanks

There is no easy way to replace the end. Is it a new cable from a parts store?

Pull the end down to where you can see it. If it doesn't have threads, then it's bad. If it does, then maybe you don't have the inner core pushed into the speedo head enough to make the end thread on? Just a guess.........

The cable that is there is what came on the truck when I bought it. The cable end is smooth inside, it's not stripped. The speedometer will operate when I push that on the back of the speedo, but it starts coming off by the 2nd or 3rd bump.

I will just find a replacement cable, and thanks to you guys I know I need to make sure it's threaded on the speedo end! Thanks guys again for your excellent help.

there is a metal ring that is threaded that slides up and down the cable. it may be down by the firewall. trace the cable and find the ring. Unlike the new vehicles the attaching end does not stay in one spot on these older trucks

I agree with frty7ford in that the nut portion on the cable end is not captive or retained at the end of the cable and may have moved down the cable.

the cable on the truck right now isn't like that, the smooth part totally covers the threads before it will engage. All the same, I traced from the back of the speedo down to the trans and there is no ring. I ordered a cable at a local parts store, hopefully it will be what you describe.

The funny thing about new vehicles, is the other 3 cars I have worked on recently--'87 Fiero, '94 Mustang, and 9X-something Honda, don't even have speedometer cables, instead they have a sender at the transmission and a driver on the speedo.

I bet they all have big sounds in them too, I remember when radios didn't come in trucks. You couldn't hear them if they did.

the cable that arrived was correct. The end of the cable is alot different than what was on there-- it has a smaller nub with the non-captive threaded ring like you guys described.
thanks
