I have been using direcway 1-way service for over 8 years now. Results are mixed. Download speeds are decent, but upload is via modem which is slooooooow. My biggest complaint was the software that splits the system. It is a REAL pain to deal with and causes some really unpredictable things at times. The modem is USB so that is another minus. Another thing to consider on the 1 way system is who provides the isp dialup. Direcway uses contract isp's and their level of commitment to service is suspect.
The 2 way systems seem much better, but as stated are quite pricy as is the monthly service. But, if it is the only game in town it beats dial-up hands down. Never, ever did I exceed the FAP usage restrictions, and I downloaded some fairly hefty Debian Linux files.
In all fairness though, I should divulge that I just switched over to cable-modem service thru Time Warner RoadRunner. It was a simple choice of economics. Once cable srevice was dropped to my neighborhood last year I was ready for some speed upgrades, but I refused to shell out the extra $ for the 2-way equipment.
Anybody wanna buy a used 1-way sysem? ha, ha, ha!

What's up with the comcast bashing anyways? I have had them for over a year with absolutely no problems or outages and I get a constant 6mb download 768kb upload. And its only $49 a month. Sounds pretty good to me.
Well, let's see. They wanted me to grant them an easement across my driveway and I said no. So they went across my access road instead and severed three house's phone lines. Their billing is all screwed up. My mother moved and discontinued her service in December, and returned the box to their office. She's still getting charged. It took them four tries to get my friend's modem working. One guy would come and do something, and then another would come and say "He didn't know what he was doing, this is how it should be". And then there's the price of cable. My mother was paying $53 a month for basic service, no optional packages whatsoever. I'm no Einstein, but I can see a screw-job coming from a mile away, and it's name is Comcast. And $49 a month for internet access is not cheap when you can get dsl for $29. Dsl has become very competitive in the past eight months in my area.
I have PTD.net cable and I pay 49.95 a month for 6Mbit download and 1.5Mbit upload... Cable is great in my area, but that could also be because it is a local company. They have a great website that will tell you when to exepect outages or if an emergency happenes they tell you what is going on and when it will be up again. In the 6mo I've had it, it may have slowed down a couple of times but I don't think I've ever lost signal.
But if you don't live on the web, then the extra money is wasted and can be spent on your vehicles, or just saved. It all depends on where your priorities are.
Wiseguy, you nailed that one on the head... Unless you download or play games, dialup is all you need. Yes it is nice to have web pages load faster, but you can have simmilar performance from dialup too. Now I spend a lot of time online, doing research, playing games, and I download large files a lot. I think this month alone I have downloaded over 2Gig and we are only in the second week.... Good luck, Dave
