I just picked one up a couple of days ago and it is hard! I am already thinking about giving up. I have the hardest time trying to blow through only one of the holes.
yeah, it just takes some time till you figure out how to hold your mouth just right. but once you can do that, and you can start playing songs n' stuff, it's cool.
I played one in my younger days. Don't you have to use your tongue to cover some holes that you don't want played?
We have a friend that sits in on some songs when the band plays and he plays the harmonica....and man he's good. Don't give up.....keep on playing.
My animals wish I did....I try to play the bag pipes......they hate any musical instrument I pick up….tells you how bad I am.
I'm learning the fiddle, my cat hates it! She runs for cover the instant the bow hits the strings. I used to have a German Shepherd who would howl when I played the harmonica.
As for playng one hole at a time, try blocking the extra holes with the tip of your tongue, experiment with it a little, you'll get it. -TD
I play several instruments the harp being one of them . My father also played harmonica all his life and left a collection of 11 different types including chromatic with the sharps and flats which I gave to a life long friend who has played in bands all his life .
The idea with straight harmonica is to use your tongue to cover the holes you do not want to play . The three holes below the note you are playing are also the corrosponding chord for that note . By opening those three in the proper sequence one can play the melody with the desired note and also the chords for them .
I play blues harp myself which requires using a harp that is 3 keys below the key that everyone else is in and drawing , (bending) , the reed in the harp up to match them . ie , the band is playing in "A" the harp required is "E" .
Hope this is of some help and you stay with it to learn the ropes .
