Cablel modem here. The biggest issue is always the cost of the monthly fee.
Most dial ups now charge around 20 bucks a month. some more some a little less. Most second phone lines cost around the same thing. If you factor in the cost of both these items and the time spend online trying to look at <s>****</s> things on the internet it is actually cheaper to have high speed cable or DSL in the long run then to have the dial up service. Time is of course money.
Now the choice is Cable or DSL. Both are the same in cost roughly.
DSL locks you in at a set spped it seems (usually I think around 350KBPS) and you are guarenteed this speed all day and night long.
Cable in most areas I have been in guarentee around the same speed but it will flunctuate during low use times to speeds up to 1500KBPS. I have the same reliability with both and the technical support ( waiting for the laughter to die down) is equal also.
I have broadband cable. I will be using cellular dial up, on my walkabout, so that will be frustrating. I have used the Cable for 3 years, and am not looking forward to anything slow at all.
Cable modem. Here we have Everest Cable. We get digital cable, high speed internet, local and long distance phone wrapped up in one package!! Only one bill to pay, (one big bill!!)
DSL here but I'm seriously thinking of switching to cable when my contract runs out. They didn't have cable here when I hooked up or I would already have it. Dial up is sooooo slow.
Well most of the addicts here are tough old codgers and they like the speed and can pay for it. Some here are at work and some are at school. I have to pay $150 a year just for access and I don't even have a computer.
