Direcway satellite Internet

Does anyone have the directv satelite internet service. I would really apreciate any imput on how you like it and how it performs compared to dial up. I am sick of my dial up service and I live out in the sticks so there is no chance of getting a cable modem.

There are some people in one forum I belong to that have it. Their big complaint is that the amount of data you can download per day is limited. So if you are into downloading large amounts of data, you'd be better off saving your money and sticking with dialup. If you're not a big downloader, then you should be OK. I'm using Cband.net for downloading only, and dialup for uploads. It's OK, but I'm dying for DSL. I won't get a cable modem because Comcast is one screwed up company, and I don't even want those Bozos near my house.

I had it for two years, and my feelings are mixed. I got decent download speeds (normally ~150kbps), but web pages didnt load ANY faster than with dialup. In that respect, it is not even close to being worth what you pay for it. The fast downloads were pretty nice too (I believe their Fair Access policy limits you to 160mb over a 4 hour period for the home edition, and 300mb over a 4 hour period for the professional).

Don't know anything about satellite service, but, I had dial-up for a bunch of years.
Got rid of it. Too slow. Couldn't get on 90% of the time. Sllllloooooowwwww.
I have had cable internet now, for three years. F A S T.
Almost T1 speeds. Incredibly fast.
DSL was just offered in my area. Too many hassles to change.
Sticking with cable.

Just depends on the level of service you have.

As far as DirectWay, my buddy has it, he too lives in the sticks. He says it is much faster than dial up but not as fast as DSL or cable.

Thanks for the replies guys. I hate going through the hassle and expense to change and I am not real optimistic about it but if there is any hope that Directway is any better than dial up I'll have to give it a shot.

The equipment cost is high for it also. But that should not be a problem if you can afford it and spend a lot of time on the internet. I have a cable hookup and I love it. There are times that it's blazingly fast then there are times it slows up, especially in the afternoon when others log on. The only reason I keep the broadband connection is because I maintain a web site for our band it helps when uploading photos to the site.
DSL is not offered where I live so it's cable, dial-up or Direcway.
Only you know if you can afford the Direcway system or not.

i have never used the service personally, but have spoke with a lot of people that have and i have yet to here any good things about the service. most have even went back to dial-up just because it's so hard dealing with the inconsistancies. also, the price doesn't help when trying to deal with the slow service times.

We've been considering it ourselves. For high speed we're pretty limited in our options here. We have cable from Mediacom, and they suck. Goes out ALL the time, good weather, bad weather, just...weather, and it'll go out. Sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes for hours. No DSL here yet, althought it's available in town 5 miles away. I just tried it for the first time yesterday on a friend's computer, and liked it. We also have a wireless internet called Airconnect available, it uses an antenna mounted outside and is line-of-sight from a transmitter on the mountain 2 miles away. They have three plans, 250kps, 500kbps, and 750kbps. Sounds too slow to me. I guess we're stuck with the cable, as lousy as it is, for now. DirecWay is about 600 bucks for the equipment and then 60 bucks a month. Not in my budget right now! -TD

What's up with the comcast bashing anyways? I have had them for over a year with absolutely no problems or outages and I get a constant 6mb download 768kb upload. And its only $49 a month. Sounds pretty good to me.
