Automatic Transmissions in trucks manufactured between March 8, 2004 and June 24, 2004 have a recall/replacement on the reverse planetary gears. I was only able to read a little more than half of the letter on a service writer's computer. But in bold print was (offer ends Sept 30, 2005.)??? When I asked, he pulled up my vin # and said my truck was made in Jan 04 and this did not apply. But it did apply to my neighbors truck. He said the gear set was in the tail shaft area and if the gears did damage to the housing they will overhaul the transmission and replace the tail shaft housing. The neighbors parts will be in stock in 5 to 7 days. (They have to order the parts).
Did the recall thing two days ago, called the Ford dealer, they ran the VIN and said come on down your the lucky winner. They had to pull some numbers off the trans to order the correct kit.The Ford dealer had my truck for one day to do the job and no reflash of the PCM,to my surprize.I've only put 110 miles since I picked up the truck, it was shifting smoother and running a little cooler. Time will tell how this fix works out.
Dealer called me today to let me know that my 05 Excursion build 8/04 is not part of the "recall"? even though I am experiencing slipping in reverse occasionally. He said Ford will not do any repairs unless one of two things occur: A. The tranny fails or, B. they can duplicate the slippage problem. I guess we'll wait until failure!
Check your transmissions external oil filter for metal shaving. Some folks who have early symtoms have found shavings in the filter. Just an idea if you want to try to avoid complete failure. One would think Ford would do this as it seems to be a good leading indicator of the problem. My 2005 is a Sep build with a tranmission build of 8 April 04. 5,700 and so far so good.
There is a paper sticker on the drivers side rear of the transmission. Its pretty large so you will not miss it. The date format is obvious when you see it.
