A friend of mine has a 2002 super -cab 4x4 ,5.4 liter.Awhile back had a keyless remote installed. Now the truck runs bad ,trouble starting with the remote and the ignition key wont start the truck at all.Can these things go so bad as to cause all these problems?Anyone have any ideas. Driftmaster77.2002 super-crew,love it.
It sounds like you have a PATS (Passive Anti Theft System) problem.
The PATS would have been bypassed somehow with the remote starter. There are a few ways of doing this depending on what type of remoter starter you have.
I would take it back to whoever installed it and see if they can shed some light on the problem.
I also have a remote start (from Ford) that won't start the vehicle sometimes. On mine, when the remote start doesn't work, neither will the key! After about 10 minutes of trying to start it, it will finally take off and start. It has been to the dealer several times, they've even duplicated the problem, but still can't figure it out.
driftmaster- Do you have a Bulldog remote starter?? If you have a Bulldog I can help you figure out your problem, because I used to have problems with my Bulldog remote starter, and figured everything out...
Its definately the PATS (Passive Anti Theft System). You have to buy a module to bypass this. Oddly, you can buy it at the Target web site. Its only $30.00
I had the same problem until I bought this. It is called :Universal Alarm Bypass Module for Ready Remote Car Starter. Just go to the site and type bypass in the search section.
had the same problem with my 01. stereo shop got another key from ford for 26 bucks and did something with it under the dash. something to do with the chip. they even tried different modules. 80 retail and 26 for businesses! thats BS!!
Some remote starters have a "Starter kill/ Anti-grind feture" This prevents you from engauging the starter if you have already remote started the vehicle. The problem is depending on th remote system it may give you the same problem that you have described. I ran into this problem with mine. If I did not use the remote to unlock my doors or if I had not locked them, I could not start my truck with the key. My solution was to disable the Anti-grind feture. If the remote starter does start the truck, you must already have the bypass kit installed. As far as the poor running I think it may be a coinsidence. Good luck.

Gee, given that the remote system apparently worked properly at one point, I wonder if a bypass module had previously been installed. You're so close to the right answer. Give it another shot.
