I need an explanation of how EDM machining works. I think it uses an energized brass wire to cut very hard alloys. Is this a CNC only process? Is this limited to what a jigsaw or plasma cutter could do? Can it make blind holes? Does the work piece have to be grounded? Is it like arc-gouging? And about 10,000 other questions...... Any info or references would be great. Thanks
Forget all that; it's magic! I put my pointy hat with the stars on, and run one almost every day.... They're right, it's too much typing. Casually, I tell people it's welding in reverse. It has to do with the spark actually melting tiny particles of the steel, which are then flushed away with some kind of dielectric fluid. There is wire and plunge. Plunge involves an electrode shaped to the form you want to burn. Happy reading!
