transmission got REALLY hot

Hi, again.
I was driving up hill in about 6 inches of snow hubs locked 4 high about 20-30 mph and my trans temp gauge went really high and it spit up a little juice. I eventually cooled down and I dont seem to have any residual problems now.
Does anyone have any idea what caused this, what I can do to prevent it from happening again?

thanks

Slow speed, high load means an unlocked torque converter and a lot of heat. Next time try 4x4L and you will greatley reduce the load on the transmission.

Check with a real tranny expert to be sure, but I think that the torque converter locks up at 40 - 45 mph no matter what gear you are in. If thats true, than it will still be unlocked and slipping in low range. If that is the case, than you need to force it to lock up using one of the aftermarket upgrades available. Banks makes one, and here is a link to another: http://www.blackclouddiesel.com/Ford...kupinstall.htm
There is also a homemake circuit design to do it: http://www.forgotton.net/mods/tclock/index.htm
If you get an answer from a tranny guy, please post it so the rest of us know for sure.

It all depends on your pcm code.

I don't have any specifics, but there are different programs that will lock and unlock the t/c at different times depending on load, acceleration, braking, gear, etc.

Probably have to google it or something to figure out which pcm code does what, or wait for someone with more knowledge on this to chime in.

How hot did it get? Mine used to get hot in stop ang go traffic, and at 210 degrees it would blow fluid out the front seal, and the fluid would get noticably darker, I changed the fluid every time it happend, I finally upgraded the converter and installed an aftermarket valve body, now I cant get it over 180 in traffic and it stays right at 150 on the highway. I belive my converter was getting weak and was getting hot enough to boil the fluid.

No. The torque converter will never lock in 1, but it will lock in 2 if the RPMS are high enough.

I thought that mine locked up pretty tight when in LOW as well, let your foot of the pedal and it is like driving a standard, start to immediately slow down due to engine braking.

By using low range, to hold the same speed, say 35, the tranny will have to shift up to the next gear, so if he was in 3rd, high range doing 35, then in low range to do 35 the tranny would have to be in O/D, which would lock the converter, raise the engine rpm and be all around better.

also the T/C lock mod works well too, http://www.forgotton.net/mods/tclock/index.htm

That is exactly what mine did. I do not have any other problems with it getting anywhere near 200, so, I think it is pretty solid besides this incident which happened in another almost exactly same situation last year. My gauge goes up to 320 and it got close to that. I have the banks trans commad module but all that does it give higher shift pressure to keep the trans from slipping during shifting.
I am going to get the t/c lock upgrade on my truck. I just didnt realize the t/c needed to lock up and how to get it to do it. now I know a little more about my trans and hopefully will keep it from happening again.
