This is probably an easy question for those that have more electrical knowledge than me, which is a lot of you. The harness that came with my sub has about a 14 or 12 gauge wire coming off it for the ground connection. I am told by one guy I work with that it would be worthwhile to solder a small length of heavy gauge(I have some 6 gauge) wire to the smaller wire and then attach the heavier gauge to the body of the truck.
I understand a little about resistance and why you don't use a 1000 foot 14 gauge extension cord to run your table saw, but don't understand how I would be gaining anything by adding short length of heavier gauge wire prior to attaching to truck body.
That doesnt make all that much sense, shortening the wire would be good because it wouldnt put as much resistance against the amp, and will help its performance. You already have short wire going from the sub so changing it after the fact would be useless, also most wiring kits have the proper guage wire, so that shouldnt be a problem.
the ground from the sub should go directly to the amp and no where else i would not ground the sub to the vehicle. now for the ground from the amp i would stick w/1 size wire from the amp to the vehicle chasis
The question that needs to be asked is what kind of sub are you installing?
Is it just a sub (speaker) or is it a sub, box and amplifier all in one like
an amplified base tube?
If it is just a sub (not amplified) both the + and – will have to be connected to a amp
If it is a amplified sub and box then the provided wiring should be more than sufficient to do the job required
