What would be considered a "normal" rate of crankcase oil consumption. My 97 CC 4WD appears to be using about a quart per 1000 miles. I've only had it for a couple of months, so I'm not sure what's good and what's bad.
That's probably in the normal range. My 01 seems to use about a quart every couple of thousand miles. It depends a little on what I'm doing with it. Others here may have probably have trucks that don't use any oil and others may use more and still be "normal."
My 02 PSD is a grocery getter. The heaviest thing it hauls is a deer in the fall (with good luck) and two bird dogs to ND once a year. It doesn't use any that I can tell. That's at 3k or 5k when ever I decide to change it that time. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess mine could be classified as an and "oil burner" in the purest sense of the term. I didn't mention it in my first post, but I do have a little seep somewhere, and find a silver-dollar sized puddle under it each morning. Probably the pedestal o-rings. So it doesn't burn all of that 2 quarts, just leaks part of it. I'm likin' it anyway!
The design of the injectors (HEUI) mean that it will use oil, especially under load.
I have seen up to 1 gallon between oil changes without any mechanical engine problems, or leaks.
Remember how much oil these engines hold...
I wouldn't be remotely worried.
Normal is a relative term ! My '96 uses 2 to 3 qts. between changes ( every 5000mi, ) depending on what I've been doing ( ie ) pulling a loaded equipment trailer or 30' travel trailer or just running around town . As Erma Bombeck ( remember her ? ) said "normal is just a setting on a clothes dryer " ...........
Depends on how hard I run it, mine just cruising around will use half-quart every 4k miles, and while towing a snowmobile trailer up the mountains will use a guart 1k miles.
