I have over 100,000 miles on my V-10. In 3,000 miles I see little to no oil consumption, I once went about 5500 miles between oil change and I saw a bit of consumption. It was still within the 'ok' range.
Oil use is normally greater during the first 16,100 km (10,000 miles) of service. As mileage increases, oil use generally decreases. Vehicles in normal service should get at least 1,450 km per liter (900 miles per quart) after 16,000 km (10,000 miles) of service. High speed driving, towing, high ambient temperature and other factors may result in greater oil use.
Fred D, my E450 V10 RV uses 1 quart per 1600 miles. I complained to the dealer, but they said that was acceptable according to Ford. I have 36,000 miles on mine now and it has never changed. Still 1600 miles to the quart. I just live with, but don't like it. A modern engine should do better than that. I run what the Owners Manual calls for 5W/30 Valoline straight oil, no synthetic. I change oil and filter every 3000 miles.
I've read that some people using synthetic oils will experience a usage problem but it's actually the additives in the oil that burn off . This leaves less oil in the pan. I would change brands of oil just to see!!
Also on an unrelated brand, I purchased a new Plymouth once that used a quart every 800 miles and the dealer said it would improve once broken in. After 10,000 miles I raised h*LL with Detroit and they agreed to do a short block replacement. This corrected the problem. They said one of the cylinders was leaking.....like it was egg shaped. Their first opinion was that it was within specs and would improve..............what a joke. Have not owned a Chrysler product since!

My F250 V10 uses a quart about every 3000 miles or so and that's the same answer I get from the dealers. Must be printed forthem to read cuz two gave me an identical answer.
Mine goes about 1500 miles before I add a quart using Motorcraft 5W-20.
It is my opinion that ALL engines use oil. There is no such thing as perfect rings or perfectly smooth cylinder walls (they're honed in a cross hatch pattern for a reason). Oil that fills the little pits and grooves on the cylinder wall is flashed by the combustion products (exhaust) as the piston comes down on the power stroke.
If your vehicle doesn't seem to be using oil it is because condensation and fuel dilution are matching the losses. Doesn't mean anything is wrong. The oil is still fine for its recommended change interval. If the process mentioned above didn't occur we could leave oil in the crankcase forever.
I don't see any problem with oil consumption of 1qt per 1000 miles. I wouldn't tear into an engine to try to fix anything unless the consumption was more than a quart in 500 miles. (If it runs out of oil before it runs out of gas there are real problems.....)
When I was using a quart every 800 miles I thought nothing was gained by doing oil changes...........it changed itself as I drove down the road!!!! Had a friend who drove a 79 Bronco way past 100,000 miles and it used a quart every 1500 miles since it was new..........never got better, never got worse.
My 2005 was using about a half quat in 3000 miles with Motorcraft 5w20...I opted to change to Pennzooil Platnum 5w20 and I use no oil in 5000 miles....silly, huh??The plumber that plumbed my house when it was built had a 2001 V10 that used a quart every 500-800 miles...Ford did nothing. He tried everything, even going to a 5w50 oil....he said it never got any better, so he went back to 5w30 cheap oil and kept a case in the bed......
