Lost a u-joint, need recomendation on replacement.
Lost the rear u-joint on the rear-driveshaft on the way home last night. Noticed intermittent vibration and a chirping at low speeds (30 -40 mph). A quick look at the joint clearly shows that it is gone (a lot of wear). The thing is self-distructing.
The truck has 75k miles on it and has been cared for like a baby. This appears to be a premature failure as the other joints look fine. A couple of questions to the team;
1) recomended replacements? - would like to get Heavy duty - greasable replacements. What are you using?
2) should I replace all the u-joints on the truck? - Limit it to both rear driveshaft joints? or just replace the defective unit?
Spicer makes good joints. Get the heavy duty ones,good and strong and greasable. If you have the drive shaft out do them both. The other is likely on its way out. 75k on a u-joint isn't that bad. No grease, nothing lasts forever!! Good luck. P.S Make sure you get the grease fittings facing the right way or its a pain to grease!! Oh ya just replace the rear driveshaft ones!
Exactly what lancer said. Replace the rear driveshaft u-joints with good greaseable ones. I prefer Spicer's too. Lube them every time you change the oil and/or before that long trip pulling a heavy load and you'll never have to replace them again.
CEP check with napa auto parts, I have same truck as you do, I replaced all mine and they had grease fittings in the ends of the u-joints that you can grease with a needle type fitting, so it wont make any difference what way they are installed, sorry I dont remember the brand name but they are good. also while your at it check center bearing and replace if needed. 01psd
