I have a 1999 F250 SD V-10 with 27000 miles. The oil consumption has been one qt per 1000 miles and less when towing. This has been since the truck was new. I kept a useage chart for 4000 miles and submitted it to the dealer. Fords response to the dealer was that 900 miles per quart for regular driving was normal and 750 miles per qt. when towing was acceptable. Neither the dealer or I could believe it. Does this sound right? What process do I follow to lean on Ford? I do wonder what the consumption will be at 50000.
Oil consumption has always been a concern to me in Ford's motors. This is one of the reasons I basically quit buying anything Ford with a gasoline motor. I had a GMC truck and the first time it ever used any oil was around 190k miles and then it started only because I blew an oil cooler line and did some damage to the motor before I realized it. On the other hand, I have several friends who have owned numerous Ford gassers and probably 50% of those truck owned have had to have oil added between oil changes.
Way back in the 60s, I bought a new Plymouth and it was using oil between oil changes. I took it back to the dealer and they told me it was normal. Two weeks later, I took it back to the same dealer, drove into the service department (that was way back when the service writer was inside the building instead of outside), and left it running...smoke coming out the exhaust. They put a new motor in the car and I drove it 105k more miles and never added oil until it had around 95k miles on it. The reason it was smoking the second time they checked it is because I took it out on the highway and made sure it was going to smoke when I took it back.
Duke: I have a 99 Ford SD with the 5.4 V8 (gas). It now has between 20 and 21 K miles. I'm now on my 2nd oil consumption test. It uses about 1.5 to 2.0 quarts of oil in 3 K miles (which is when I always change oil). 90% highway driving 65 - 70 mph. No towing or hauling. I've really babied this one so far. To no avail - I've been after Ford for months, talking to 2 different dealers and countless E-Mails with Ford's Customer Service. Ford refuses to address or even recognize the oil consumption as a problem. I heard the same as you - 900 miles per quart unless you "use" the truck, then it is 750 miles per quart. I've never been more disappointed or felt more helpless than when dealing with Ford. They really don't care!
My 99 v-10 used 0 to 1/2 quart between 3K changes in the first ~35K miles which included 500 mile drives at 75-80mph. On a long trip (1500miles) with some higher speeds (80-85 mph) last summer it used 2 quarts. Since then it's been on other long trips, both summer and winter, at 75-80mph and is back to no consumption between changes. Don't know what to make of this other than at sustained higher rpm I might have a little bit of blow-by around the rings.
I have had this problem too and I have been fighting it for the last 20000K. My 5.4L F250SD 4X4 burns 2 liters of oil every 5000K. I have gone to the dealer contacted Ford and done everything I know to get the problem fixed but with no results. All they have been doing has been giving me the run around since I now have 58000K on my truck. I now have absolutely no confidence in Ford and am seriously considering never buying another Ford again. Ford obviously doesn't care about their customers and to only way to make them learn is to stop buying Fords till they smarten up.
