Google and you

Google has implemented a new feature wherein you can type someone's
telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and then you will be given a map to their house.

Before forwarding this, I tested it by typing my telephone number in
google.com. My phone number came up, and when I clicked on the MapQuest link, it
actually mapped out where I live. Quite scary. Please look up your own number. Read below for details.

Think about it--if a child, single person, ANYONE gives out his/her phone number, someone can actually now look it up to find out where he/she lives.
The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. This is not a hoax. MapQuest will put a star on your house on your street.

In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to:
_http://www.google.com/_ (http://www.google.com/) . Type your phone number in the search bar with dashes (i.e. 555-555-1212) (dashes and no spaces very important (or not,) I just tried it without any dashes or spaces and it pulled up an address for the number I was searching) and hit enter. This will divulge your name and address. You will see a link option to the right for MapQuest (click on it), which will use the address to provide a map to your home or place of business.

If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on the telephone icon next to your phone number. I removed my name, but it takes 48 hours. If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not be in there, but it is a good idea just to check.

Please forward on to friends and family.

It works but your name has to be listed in the phone book of your area.

"anybody for posting there phone numbers here?"

You can generally do the same thing with online phone books. If you think that's bad, from time to time you should check the last four digits of your credit card(s) number. I.E. **** **** **** 1234. Some online net retailer's sites are not secure. It's mostly mom & pop type sites that bought a program to put on their PC so they could do online sales. I don't think it's as much of a problem as when it was first discovered. I imagine the credit card companies are now doing constant searches to plug any leaks as soon as they pop up.

That's not new. It's been available for a long time on Google. If your phone number is published locally, it's public information.

You can go to most any on-line phone book, get a persons phone number and address, then go to MapQuest, or any other map site, same thing.

Or, you can use the Criss-Cross directory, and, with an address, phone number, or a name, do the same thing.

Yes, It is not new - it was one of the first things I found out when I initially tried the internet years ago. Thieves , perverts and criminals know about everything to begin with-- we often fail to give them the credit for being as smart as they are. There are really few things that anyone can't find out about another person now.
