Directory of Cell Phone Numbers to be Published
Just in case you have not heard, a directory of cell phone numbers will soon be published for all consumers to have access to. This will open the doors for solicitors to call you on your cell phones, using up the precious minutes that we pay lots of money for.
The Federal Trade Commission has set up a "do not call" list. To be
included on the "do not call" list, you must call from the number you wish to register. The number is 1-888-382-1222 or you can go to their website at http://www.donotcall.gov/. You may also use this list for your home phone.
I would suggest that you get your cell phones on the list now because it
must be listed for 3 months before telemarketers are required to abide by
your request to "do not call."
Yep! Saw it on the news the other night that a Cell Number Directory will be published in the next year.
It never hurts to list all of your numbers with the 'Do Not Call' list. I have done both of my cell #'s as well as both of my home #'s. At least it cuts down on most of the calls.
http://urbanlegends.about.com/librar..._directory.htm While it's true that the major wireless phone providers (with the sole exception of Verizon) have announced their intention to compile a directory of customers' cell phone numbers, it isn't true that they plan to "publish" said directory for all to see. The numbers will be made available only if customers opt in, and will be accessible only by those who call information and pay a fee. Participating service providers swear the numbers will never be available to telemarketers.
I would opt out just in case dont you get changed for each call you would recieve.
well i'm going to call varizon and confirm this.....its my time and my number.
i already have my number turned off so it won't show up, unless i dial *82, then it will shopw the number.
Has anybody here registered their number? i think i'm going to, already got the landline done. ahhhh peace at dinner time gotta love it
Okay i just got off the phone with verizon, this is what they said . The president of verizon, and employees and so far a large percentage ot the customer base do not agree with publishing cell pnone number, and will fight the publishing of the numbers, they said that they welcome input supporting there position on this issue, and for those that want to comment on this may go online to their site and send an e-mail.
if you are against publishing of cell numbers ,and are a verizon customer, please send a Positive that you agree with thier stance on this...
I have had my cell phones on the do not call list for just over a year... I would advise that everyone get onto it. Your cell number does not need to be published in a directory for marketers to get hold of it, but be recorded by any company you called. Companies buy the phone logs of other companies, just to get phone numbers... Which they then sell to marketeers. So, if you have not been called on your cell phone, yet.. just wait a while. I have had the same number for 8 years now, and it is well known.. which is why I put it on the do not call list.. I still get about one telemarketer a month hasseling me. I just get annoyed, growl a bit, and demand they remove my number..
Wisconsin setup a no-call list a few years ago and it works very well. I can't remember the last time I had a telemarketer call my house. I don't know how well the federal one work though.
Before the no call list, when a telemarketer called I would ask them to hold on while I go to get who they are calling for, and put the phone down for about 5 minutes or so.
Don't most cell phones have an 'ignore call' button? if I don't recognize the number calling me, I simply don't answer it. If the ringing becomes annoying, I can silence the ringer.
I thought about that Stu, but I have kith and kin all the way from Texas to Georgia and never know what emergency might come up or what area code they might be in at the time. My son and 3 of my brothers work construction all over the East Coast. It would be hard for me just to ignore a call.
You're right there, Ron. It's also prolly alot more work to keep up with the numbers of relatives than it is to just get your name on the don't call list. Reckon I oughtta do that...
I won't answer a call if my phone doesn't list it or if I do not recognize the number. I only use mine for emergencies anyway. I see so many around town with a cell phone in their ear, driving around, walking through stores...at restaurants. What did we we do before cell phones came along?
