Thanks to everyone for the help last week on paint colors! I've run into another problem with my 1965 F-100. It looks like the doors may have been swapped out because the VIN doesn't match what I've got. I've got the holes for all the chrome along the body and the custom cab holes in the doors but the VIN tells me it's a standard cab. My question is where do I find the VIN on the frame? I would like to put my truck back to as close to original as possible but need help on what it would have looked like. Are there any sights out there that have color pictures of original factory trucks or any books anyone recommends? Thanks to all.
Look for the correct VIN to be stamped on the frame.
It will be on the upper frame rail, on the passenger side, about where the alternator is.
It is often faint. You will most likely need a wire brush, if not a scraper. Keep working at it, they are there.
This is the correct number. It will be the same as the "Warranty Number" found on the original plate, but the frame number will not include the other rows of codes, such as paint, transmission and rear end ratio.
Keep in mind that if your state has title/VIN inspections, this is where they will look, so if your title doesn't match it now, you have time to get it fixed.
Does anyone know how far back those "hidden" VIN's go? I found it on my '63 but not on the '61. Also what is the production number cut off for '61/'62/'63 etc.
