If your also having defrost problems it may be vacuum related.
Heres a TSB on it.
Vacuum Pump Inop or Ventilation System Deverts to,or Only Blows Through,
Defrost Vents:If the vents devert to the defrost mode,
this is usually due to a leak in the vacuum system.
Typically if the problem is in the automatic hub system,
this will only occur when 4X4 is selected.
If it occurs on in a specifc ventilation mode,
the vacuum servos associated with that selection would be suspect.
If the ventilation system stays on defrost at all times,
a leak in the system at the vacuum pump,
or the vacuum pump itself may be at fault.
For vacuum pumps that are inoperative or continuously running,
replace with P/N 4C3Z-2A451-AB. Broadcast Message 1244, 1575, 3278;

I got my truck stuck for the first time this past weekend and it wouldn't shift into 4lo. I was madder than hell sitting in that ditch with a $48,000 truck that wouldn't shift into 4 low. I put it in neutral, selected 4 low from 4 high, sat there, nothing ever happened. I tried putting it back in D and R a few times, then back to Neutrak, but it never shifted into 4 low. My truck never wants to go into 4 low. My 2000 F-150 had no problems with its ESOF. It was flawless, but this one sucks. Is there any kind of adjuctment Ford can make to it or anything? It WILL be going back to the dealer.
Tried to get the boat out of the back yard on Sunday. after 2 inches of rain the truck sunk. shifted into 4Lo. Worked ok I thought! Light came on, but no 4x4. The baha claws dug a real nice set of holes. I had to switch the hubs from auto into manual? then everything work as advertised.???????????
the shop was gonna charge me over 600 dollars to fix the esof...new motor + labor...the truck has 50,000 miles on it...when it as all said and done the dealer was trying to get me to pay for everything but when i gave them a little bit of resistance about it by saying that i would buy the parts somewhere else and do the work myself, they told me that they could do a PO5 which gets FORD involved and that cut my price don to 325 dollars..i am so ****ed that they didnt tell me that in the first place...you have to watch ford dealers because they try to get as much money out of you and then pocket what they can even if it means you paying more...they are just trying to screw us...give them some resistance and they will crumble to not lose your business

The truck needs to be in Neutral and you must have the brake pedal depressed or it won't go into 4WL.
