Question Exhaust in cab of 93 Explorer

Every now and then, while on the highway, the cab of my 93 Explorer fills up with smoke. Just had the AC unit replaced. Any idea as to what could be causing this to happen? I'd like to arrive not smelling like the inside of an exhaust pipe. I've searched the forums for someone else who may have had a similar problem, but I couldn't come up with any solution specifically for an Exlporer.

Where is the smoke coming in the cab? Through the floor, vents, firewall, ect.

I would get to a muffler shop (not Meineke) ASAP. This problem can be deadly. You must have a leaking exhasut but need more information to help and perhaps a hole in the floorboard or firewall. Answer's to CKRichard's questions would be a big help.

Make sure you check the outlet end of the muffler, and the over the axel pipe and resonator. Since they are all in back of the muffler, you could have a major leak and yet the system would still be quiet.

The smoke comes in from the vents. Would this indicate the muffler? What should I ask the shop/mec to do?

The vents meen that either then fan motor is shot, or there are leaves/pine neadles in the fan that are causing it to smoke. To fix the problem pull the fan motor out and see if it is hard to turn and/or there is a bunch of junk inside of it. The fan motor is located to all the way to the passenger side on the fire wall.
The exhaust system is fine.

are you sure it is not moisture from the A/C work. maybe coolant/water is in the heater box and when the heater gets hot it is steaming???? I have seen this many times.

Thanks so much for your posting ckrichard. We park the car outside under the trees and the smell/smoke from the vents sometimes tends to smell like burning leaves. We'll pull the fan out this weekend and take a look. I'll post back to let you know if we were successful. I'm relieved it isn't the muffler.
