DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW WHAT YEAR THE SMOG PUMP AND EGR VALVE STUFF BECAME MANDITORY ON P/U TRUCKS? THE GUY AT THE TEXAS VEHICLE INSPECTION STATION TOLD ME THAT SINCE I HAD A SMOG PUMP BRACKET ON MY TRUCK I HAD TO HAVE ONE AND IT HAD TO WORK. I PLAN ON HAVING A 351 FROM 79 PUT IN MY 81 F150 AND THAT WOULD BE ONE MORE THING I HAVE TO FIND IF INDEED I DO NEED IT.
If you have the sticker on the radiator, it pretty much tells the story. I am sure it would have egr. The smog pump is debatable. I put a 79 351w in my 1980 f150, and the new motor didn't have a smog pump either. So if they make you put a smog pump on an engine that didn't have it originally, you are going to have to fake it, since you won't have the ports in the back of the heads open for it to hook up. If you get the other engine and keep the original carb, go ahead and keep some of the smog like the egr. It will run better if you keep it all intact. When I put my motor in, I had bought the whole car. When I transferred it over, I swapped the charcoal cannister, lines and all over to the truck.
I ALREADY HAVE THE ENGINE, AND IT CAME WITH NONE OF THE POLLUTION STUFF.IT DIDN'T EVEN COME WITH A CARB. I PLAN ON AN AFTERMARKET INTAKE AND I'LL USE THE HOLLY 600 OFF MY 302. BUT HOW DO YOU HOOK THE EGR TO THE HOLLY CARB. WILL I NEED AN ADAPTER PLATE FOR THE 4 BBL CARB?
Please don't post all in capital letters. It's considered "HOLLERING" and is both rude, and reflects poorly on you as an individual, okay?
I believe the A.I.R. (Air Injection Reaction) system was introduced in the early 70's, 1972 if I'm not mistaken.
Pumps run about $30 at most scrap yards, you might compare new/rebuilt prices (like from 10,000 Auto Parts, or Autozone) to the ones at a scrap yard, but you can usually get all the valving and hoses at a yard along with it, so it comes out cheaper.
Also shop the local classifieds for people parting trucks out, it gets even cheaper still!!!
Make contacts in the local rodding, and truck community, do as much "Horse Trading" as you can.
Off subject: The Hollywood yuppy elite whine about pollution control, saving the world from the evil car drivers of the world, etc, but think nothing of burning hundreds of gallons of smoky oil for the explosions and fires in their movies. I think of that every time I have to worry about an EGR problem. Ever wonder why the enviromentalists leave them alone?
