Hello everyone
I am having a problem with my truck. I have an 86 f150 with a efi 302 in it. When i start the truck in the morning it will start and die. i crank it back up and it will usually die again if i do not rev the engine a little. When the engine is warm the idle is not good. When i drive the truck at about 40-45 it kind of vibrates and then doesnt and then vibrates again in a continuous cycle. I have already replaced the air bypass valve and it didnt help. Oh yeah and on deceleration it misses and sometimes at a speed a little above idle.
Any help will be greatly appreciated
thank you in advance.
Have you checked the basic tune up items such as wires, plugs, filters, etc. If so, you may want to put a diagnostic check into the computer for codes first. If tune up and codes are ok we can procede into other areas.
In the past 3 months i have put on new cap, rotor, wires, plugs, filter fuel and air, thermostat 160, all new sensors except egr, long block engine, new hoses, just about everything. I dont think i replaced the coil. would the coil cause this many problems.there is somekind of fuel filter on the frame that looks like a canister. i have not changed that. I have not run a code reader on it. Do you know how much i can purchase one for
thanks in advance.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jun-02 AT 02:04 PM (EST)]When you replaced the air-bypass valve, did you clean around the throttle butterfly? Also, I believe the manual says with the truck idling, pulling the plug off the bypass valve should make the truck slowly die. If it doesn't do this, somebody may have tried to adjust the idle stop screw on the throttle cable. A certain amount of air has to go through the bypass valve, and a certain amount has to go through the throttle butterfly.
Forgot to mention, anytime you make a major adjustment or change to the motor, it's sometimes helpful to pull the battery cable off and then put it back on. This will clear all computer codes and reset the computer.

I cleaned the throttle plates good. I will have to try what you mentioned tommorow. if the truck doesnt slowly die or stays running what should i do.
thanks
