fuel problems

fuel problems

ok here it goes, i have an '86 f-150, it a has a carburated 302 in it. The engine has less than 1000 miles on it. As i am going down the road at about 55 mph I will put my foot to the floor and all the truck does is spit and sputter and it tries to die when i touch the gas pedal. The only thing it will do is idle for a little bit and then i can sometimes go but usually i idle the truck back to my house. Some times the truck will go after it starts acting up, but it will only go for a little bit and then spit and sputter again.

Any help or suggestions will be apreciative

Hi,

Need more info. What kind of carb? Holley, Edle? 2bbl, 4bbl, Vacuum or mechanical? New, used, re-built?

While at 55mph does it other wise run OK? except when floored?

Sounds like you might be starving for gas. Clogged filter, fuel pump bad, incorrect float setting, ran over a skunk.

It has a Edelbrock 600cfm 4bbl on it. Today we grabbed an old gas can from my garage went and filled it with gas and stuck the fuel line in that and drove around for an hour and i didnt have a problem. Someone suggested that i should take my gas caps off and I did that but it did not help. So right now it has a gas tank strapped down in the back of it so i can get to school. It has a vaccum advance and the carburator is only a month old. It doent seem to matter how fast i am going when it happens it just starts chugging and wants to die. Anymore help and suggestions are appreciated
