Need help I6 died and won't start
I have a '92 f150 with an I6. A few weeks ago the fuel pump in the front tank died. I replaced it. The truck was running fine only the check engine light would come on periodically. I didn't have time to run codes at the time. It ran for around 2 weeks. Today while driving to work the engine just shut off, just like the fuel pump died. When I tried to start it, it would just crank and it doesn't smell like fuel is getting to the engine. I tried switching tanks and noticed that the fuel pump continuously runs once the key is turned on. It won't quit like it isn't getting primed. Has anyone had this problem and knows what it is. I haven't gotten it home yet it is sitting on the side of the road not far from home. I wanted to get this on as soon as possible because I would like to know if I am going to be able to fix the problem at home. Both fuel pumps continually run when the key is switched on depending on which tank I chose of course. It just cranks without attempting to start and the smell isn't consistent with fuel not igniting. I will check for spark when I get it home.
Thanks
Ken
Thanks

Check the inertia switch first, then pull and replace the fuel pump relay...probably time for it anyway. Your pumps should whine for a few seconds and then stop right when you turn on the key...if the relay is working correctly. If that's not it, then pull the codes and check for spark.
I towed the truck home. I pulled it home with another truck so I had to have the ignition on. I heard the fuel pumps running when we started pulling it but didn't notice it when we arrived home. Now I know that I don't have spark. My fuel pumps aren't working now when I turn on the key. I tried to pull codes and the check engine light inside doesn't blink it just stays lit. I also tried with a voltmeter but it didn't do anything but show voltage. It wouldn't bounce. I don't really know where to start but I am willing to try almost anything. Is there a way to test the computer to see if it is just shot. I think it might be gone but I haven't found how to test it only the things that it runs.
Try resetting the computer by pulling the battery cables off for at least 10 minutes. Its the same as resetting/rebooting your home computer. Don't know the procedure for testing the computer, but try a search for pulling the codes in this forum. I've forgotten the link that shows you how to do it. Can't remember if your 92 can be done with the jumper wire or if it requires a code reader. I bet a Haynes manual can tell you how to diagnose the computer, too.
I tried unhooking the battery for 15 minutes. After reconnecting, still no fuel pump priming, cranking but not trying to start. Anyone know how to tell when the computer is gone would be helpful.
I haven't had the time to try and find the solution so I am trying to decide what I should do. I don't know whether to sell the truck for whatever I can get out of it or part it out. I don't think that it is that hard to fix but I have another truck and don't really need to spend the money at this time. Has anyone had any luck parting out a truck like this before.
I finally had time to check the problem out. It took a long time to have my friend (mechanic) have time to come over to the house and look at the truck. He checked everything out. No fuel pressure, no spark, no communication with the computer, the only thing I had was power to crank the beast and to run the guages. He decided to agree with me
and remove the computer. It was fried.
It seems as though it stems for the fact that when I purchased the truck it would leak when it rained. It seemed to come from the wheel wells but when my windshield cracked one day and I had it replaced I found out the one that put it in before hadn't sealed the entire bottom of the windshield in. Long story short, it leaked, got in the computer, fried it 6 months after I replaced the windshield. Truck is running but now I going to sell it anyway. Too many vehicles to maintain at this time.
Thanks to everyone on this forum for all the interesting topics that have been brought up I have enjoyed them all.
