normal temp cant be normal

the temp gauge on my 85 f-150 is just like yours.however i do get curious has to what normal is.i just change the thermostat to a 165 from a 195.before the change it averaged abot the "m" but change alot... from "n' to "a". now it stays on "n". it dosent bounce around so that gives me comfort but i still dont know if I'm running the engine to cool. or even how the letters on the guage translate to numbers.(ex. n= 165) just my guess. long story short what should the 300 temp be?? and any aftermarket numbered guages avaliable?

165 is WAY too cold... It will increase the wear in the motor. The factory gauge isn't calibrated, so A may only be 190 degrees. IF the thermostat is working (can be witnessed on the gauge) then why worry about the temp?

Slap on a mechanical gauge to be sure. All my trucks always stayed by the O in normal when running normal, but it seems every truck is different.

With some cheap thermostats they are either all the way open or all the way closed with a wide temperature range between open and close. When the engine temperature is hot enough to open the thermostat it opens wide allowing cold water from the radiator to enter the engine until the temperature is cold enough to close the thermostat causing the guage to drop a lot. Then the temperature and guage will begin to rise again and the process repeats. Thats what was causing your guage to move so much. The thermostat needs to be at least 180 but should be 195. Too cold can cause your oil to create deposits.
