question... whenever it is moist out and i drive my car after letting it sit for a while (IE: mornings on my way to work) ill go to tap the brakes and they lock up and almost put me through the windshield. i have replaced my pads and rotors and it still does it, i initially thought it was rust that caused it. i guess it still could be, but then wouldnt it hapen to everyone, i need help before i break my nose
Front lock up????? See a lot of rears lock up because of moisture in drums and on shoes. After first Braking event they are good for rest of day. Suggest pulling rear drums before driving after Broncos sit overnight to see whats in the drum. We usually replace shoes with Motocraft shoes to fix this>
pretty sure its not the rear brakes, becuz the rear wheels never slide when it happens, the nose dives, and puts me to an instant stop. but yeah after i ride them out gently for a minute, theyre fine the rest of the day
????????? I don't know- when rear is prob it about throws you into windshield.Never seen or heard of both front brakes locking up on first braking event- and then ok after- BUT I will take you at your word, AND I will say after 27 years in the service dept at the same Ford dealership, I still learn something new about every day- at work and on this Ford-Truck site- and Hell I did(?) think I knew quite a bit about Fords!!!!!!! Hope someone else will respond with their thoughts on you problem!!!
It is flash rusting on the rotors. It is a documented issue with Ford. I had this issue with my 96. When I first noticed it, I asked my bud the local service manager. He told me flat out that it was flash rusting, and there really isnt anything they can do about it.
my bronco does the same thing in the morning, one front wheel will lock up when im backing down the driveway. and the other day, my passenger brake locked up hard when i was coming down a hill in the snow and i went right in the ditch. luckly i backed it right out, but it was embarassing. and now it does it intermitantly, mostly in the mornings, cause its too darn cold here...as im typing its -5 degrees
The front will still lock with a RABS system. If you have RABS or ABS, make sure that the proportioning valve is working properly. I had to replace mine. It is mounted towards the front on the driver's side frame rail. I am not sure if it is called a proportioning valve per se; but that is what it does.
Flash rusting has been around since disc brake came out, But the prob. has been what the pads are made of and how they absorb moisture and their metallic makeup.Grease -brake fluid and water cause a lockup situation on brake shoe-pad material Nothing has worked as good as asbestes and we didn't have as much brake probs. untill they did away with it!!!
yea its a comb of the flash rust and the moisture.. the water makes the pads grab hard. The same thing happens to me.. Once i get above 5 mph it doesnt happen and once they heat up a little they are fine. Usually just a start up thing in the morning. The crap has to wear/melt of you rotors and pads before it stops.
is it a carburated motor? if so maybe the increased vacumn when the choke is closed is just making the power brake booster much more sensative. isnt there a vacumn limiter on the line that goes to the booster?
Try riding your brakes gently the last few blocks before you get home and park 'er for the night; might help to get rid of pad moisture if that's your problem.
