I First started with doing a Duraspark Upgrade. After a few adjustments and 180degrees out. 3 Distributors later (thanks Kragen for good quality.)
Starts great
Revs OK not great, takes a while to reach hight RPM
POPs sputters backfires through the carb.
Misses at high rpm
No power on test drive.
So i put the points back in.. and same thing.... The engine ran well before i started everything.
So yes i have been cranking the **** out of the thing with the wrong timing for awhile. So now my
Ingnition is all good
Firing order is correct
Timing is 10 BTDC (tried all ranges)
Compression test 125lb. on all
Well if it ran good before you started then it has to be some thing you
fiddled around with when changing over. A cracked coil tower could
cause some of your problems but you didn't mess with the coil right?
When you put the dist. back in did the rotor come up to #1 firing
position exactly ? You weren't a toothe off ? Try looking in the engine
compartment at nite while its running looking for spark leak. If the points
are back in whats the dwell set up at - gap. All electrical connections
good - correct? When you put the dist in was #1 really at TDC. Mech.
advance sticking. Springs ok? Vacuum advance diaphragm leaking?
Cracked distr cap? Make any pencil marks on the distr housing ?
Wires loose at the coil? Cross fire at the plug wires? Connector clips
tore loose in plug boots. Ohm out the plug wires - good? ohm out
spark plugs. RZ
When you changed distributers are you sure you got the firing order right on the plug wires. Plug wires on the wrong cylinder will fire at the wrong time causing a back fire.
