I think i may have a ford 255 motor, does this motor even exist or am i making things up?? i though i saw before on a website that they do exist but i cant remeber. anyone know how much they are worth or when they were made?
The 255 was built in 1980, 81 and 82.
It's a real thing of beauty....or not.
It looks like a 302. It has heads with very small oval shaped intake ports, tiny valves etc.
They had around 120 hp.
I've thrown a couple of them out. I doubt you'd find someone that would give you anything for it other than for the scrap metal.
A small block cam will fit and headers should be the same. I don't think anyone makes a good intake for it. A 302 intake won't fit because of the ports.
Unfortunately I have a 255 in my tbird it was designed to be better on fuel(by 1mpg), lighter(by 60lbs), and more powerful(by 10%), than the 5.0 aswell as share 85% "commonallity" between the engines. It has a smaller bore therefore smaller valves and runners to accomodate it. The engine was lightened by using an open-webbed aluminum intake, a hollow crankshaft, and the engine block was lightened by reducing wall thickness and bolt-boss diameters. "The 4.2-liter is the newest addition to the ford family of high-output engines" with a whopping 119 hp! and (I believe) 130 ft/lbs of torque
It shares the same cam and exhaust manifolds aswell as *maybe heads but since the intake is narrowed by 15% over the 302 there are no aftermarket pieces available.
If someone will give you $50 for it offer to deliver it for free and run laughing! its not very fuel efficient (especially after 25 years) it isnt powerful (although it does zip around 3-4000 rpm nicely) and they would be just as or more expensive to rebuild than a 302 or 351w

r there any parts available to rebuild it? the guy wants to put it into a jeep so what would be needed for the conversion, it also needs completely rebuilt, will he find stock parts?
I actually just checked and a rebuild kit (bearings, gaskets, rings) is only $20 more than one for a 302 and you should be able to get oversized pistons if needed, The only things that would appear to be 255 specific are the block, intake, and heads which could be re-used. Personally I would still go looking for a 302, i've sold rebuildable long blocks for $25 (and thats canadian!)
Nothing will interchange between the 2 motors. All they did to create the 255 was to shrink the bore of a 302 to 3.5", put on smaller heads with ghetto "tunnel-port" style runners, smaller valves, 1.68" intakes I believe. You cant put 302 heads on it because the bore is too small, and you cant bore it past 3.540". No aftermarket intake for it, and a 302 intake will not work because of the ports. the stock heads could be worked over a bit and the cam does interchange but the intake still sucks. Im pretty sure the 255 had about 200lb.ft not 130. Sell it to the guy and buy a 302.
