Newly acquired 87 F150 with big 6 and 4 on floor with granny low runs 55 at 2700 RPM. Was there an optional OVERDRIVE box that i could swap from junk yard to enable me to cruise at a lower motor speed?
An M5OD 5 speed or a ZF 5 speed with granny first would give you an OD gear, but would require rigging up a hydraulic clutch set up, and I'm pretty sure the driveshaft lengths are different.
What I'm thinking about is something like the early ford or Studebaker overdrive units that bolt to the existing transmission case replacing the extension housing and give a planetary overdrive gear with switchable and kickdown capability. Believe they were made by Borg-Warner.
I was hoping that it was an option still into the 87 year and could be installed to the present case. after locating from a junque yard
Gear Vendors makes an overdrive unit that fits that description. You can read about it www.gearvendors.com. US Gear also makes one. Check out www.usgear.com. Advance Adapters also sells the Ranger Torque Splitter overdrive unit. You can see it at www.advanceadapters.com. They are all expensive.
Another way to go would be to swap the granny 4speed for a toploader 4speed with an overdrive 4th gear. Go to www.5speeds.com/toploader.html to read about those.
