With my 04' F-350, XLT, SC, V-10, 6-speed, 4:30 LS,DRW, My best calculated mileage so far has been 11.2 mpg, some mixed driving, average with it around town is 10 mpg, when we went to Nova Scotia, this past summer, truck was loaded and pulling a 23' camper, it averaged 8.75 to 9.75 mpg, and we were hauling the freight to,,, .
Last night I plowed for 6 hrs with it, pushing a 9' Fisher plow, and used 1/4 of a tank of gas, my previous PSD trucks would use the same amount . I really like this truck, .

You must have a lot bigger tank than I had on my '02 f3509 v-10 because when I plowed with that I could count on a tank of gas every 5 hours.
I just filled er up again today.The fuel mileage is not making me any happier. On this tankful I travelled 112.2 miles and it took 24.1 gallons to fill it up, this means that I got approx 4.65 mpg.However I plowed for 2-3 hours on this tankful and there was at least 30 minutes a day of idle time while warming the truck up.If I look at it with the hour gauge I went 5.8 hours on 24.1 galons of gas, which is about 4.15 gallons per hour. If I can use the same amout of gas per hour and travel 65 miles per hour It would put my fuel mileage at about 14.8mpg. OH HOW I HOPE. If the poor mileage continues I will have to consult my dealer. I do not believe that I should be getting mileage this bad with a new truck.
I get the 6mpg when I plow, this means that the truck never gets shut off, most of the time it will run for 20-24 hours, it doesn't get shut off for meals, gas, or to shovel walks, which takes almost as much time as plowing, so I would say that at least 1\3 of my tank is idling, and I still get 6 mpg, I would have to wonder if I was only getting 4.65mpg!!!
The cold snap finally broke up here yesterday. It got up to near 25 degrees for a high. Yesterday I also had to go to a meeting about 80 miles round trip and I noticed that I could not see my fuel gauge dropping like it had been. As of tody I have been about 120 miles and my truck is on about 3/4 tank. In that 120 miles I hauled two loads of logs also. It looks like this tankful, if all stays the same should give me between 9-10 mpg. This makes me feel better than the 4.65 I averaged with the last tankful.
labwillow with all the problems you had at the start have you reset your computer (ecm) give the ecm a chanch to relearn? Maybe there is a little better milage in that?! Sounds like 9-10 won't be bad though...
SMiller, How do I reset my computer? Things seem to be working properly now but I am open to try anything to make it better. I also had my hubs unlocked when I put those highway miles on. I am assuming that also helped with the milage numbers. Right now I have 218 miles and the gauge is just above 1/4 tank.
Yah, having the hubs unlocked gives 1\2 to 1 mpg better, plus less wear and tear, just disconnect the negative battery cable for at least a half hour, you will have to reset your radio programs but other then that it will be ok. I like to just leave the negative disconnected for the night and put it back on in the morning, I think it helps after you reset the computer to drive it a little harder then you normally drive, but that is just me. It can only help...
Keep us up on the milage, does it feel any stronger since getting broken in a little? I rode in a 2-valve V-10 the other day and it didn't feel anything like the 3-valve I drove, new one felt much stronger?!
I have a little over 1,000 miles on my 05 V10. I am getting 10/10.5 MPG on the first couple of fill ups. I had one that was 7.3 MPG but that included towing 10,000 LBS. This is not that bad. My 03 6 liter only got 16 mpg even after it was broken in.
I hope you had at least 500-600 miles on that thing before you hooked 10,000lbs behind it, kinda breaking those gears in a little hard among other things...
I definately notice the improved power of the 3 valve motor compared to my old 2 valve.I notice that it does not take as much throttle to get my new truck going even though the new one weighs 2300lbs more. I also noticed how that when I pulled a load the other day This new motor does it without any problem. (my old one did to,it just seemed like I had to get after it more to get my trailer rollin) I also noticed how much more stable it is towing when you have dual rear wheels.
I filled up on thursday morning. 235.5 miles 32.5 gallons gas =7.2 mpg. This included about 110 miles of highway driving with the hubs unlocked adn the remainder being local in town driving. I also hauled two loads of logs at approx. 10,000 +/- lbs and 1 load of pulp at 7000 lbs on this tankful. I can accept 7 mpg when I am using it like its meant to be used.
Smiller, Yes I made sure to wait and put some mixed driving miles on it. I had almost 800 on her. I also took it as easy as I could while towing. I went more for hitch set up and brake controler set up. It sure felt like I did not have to work it hard to maintain 55 mph. I could have gone faster, but I will wait a little longer to set the land speed records. So far I am very pleased. Last tank was almost 11 mpg. This is mixed driving and not on flat land.
