Ihave a 1996 f150, with 5.0l engine. Put on new serpentine belt, now
headlights dim. and battery gauge drops down in the low normal area
when I brake or use accesories while idling. I took it to Ford dealer,
they said this was characteristic. The only way to solve the problem
was to put smaller pully on alternator. Sounds like a mickey mouse
way to solve the problem. Ford new about this problem back in 1993.
Any suggestions on this? Neut50
Check your grounds and the quality of the battery connections. Some drop off in voltage at idle is normal depending on the amount of load on the alternator. In my truck it takes both the headlights and the HVAC blower to do this, brakes alone doesn't cause voltage to dip.
Slight dimming of the headlights and a dropping voltmeter at idle is not really a problem unless the vehicle is a police car or otherwise spends a lot of time at idle.
