I have a 1972 ford galaxy 500 with a 351 windsor engine, recently I did a top overhaul and is in the process timing and valve adjustments. I have followed the manual to adjust the adjustable rocker arms, and during starts I have back fires through the carburator and very rough running. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
There are several different ways I adjust rockers. The one that always works is with piston TDC, adjust rockers where you can just barely finger spin pushrods. I have never had much luck with the way the service manuals call for.

I havn't continued with the valve adjustment with this 351 windsor, It seems like the manual does not really work. The last time I adjusted the valve was as follows; # 1 at TDC, tighten the retaining nuts on the intake and exhaust valves until unable to turn push rods by finger, then additional 3/4 of a turn and repeat the process by the firing order. This is by the manual, the end result is allot of back firing through the carburator and diffulty to start. One suggestions was to tighten the retainer nut to a point where you cannot turn the push rods by finger with not an additional 3/4 turn. Would this cause any valve lashing?. Another question, What would be a good preset on the carburator in regards to the fuel air mixture e.g. 3 turns or 4 turns from closed to begin with?, the manual does not give you this settings.
What kind of carb is it? it depends what motor AND what carb, but gut instinct is that 4 turns is WAY too rich, 3 is probably a little too rich, I would start at 2 or 2 1/2
but its really dependent on what carb/motor combo you have
On the valves, I tighten them until you can just barely turn them by hand and stop there. That is with the lifter fully pumped up. If it ticks, tighten the ticking ones up until they stop. On Carbs, I start off at 1 turn on Edelbrock and about 1 1/2 on Holley. I do my best not to use factory carbs, except the Carters on some of the Mopars.
