Need pool table advice.
I'd like to get a pool table for the recroom and I'm wondering what's the minimum amout of space you need around the table. Also what should I look for in a decent quality table?

I'd say at least 4 feet. Some of the older pool tables have excellent workmanship with thick slate beds and quality felt. If you buy a used one, consider the hassle of moving that heavy sucker, especially if it involves stairs. When I sold my last house, I left the pool table. Good luck.

New tables come with very cheap or free delivery and set up. It runs about 300-400 to move and set up/re cloth a used one. Get 1 inch slate for sure, and look under the tables to see the support beams of the table. After you look at a few, you will see what is good. Also ask about the fasteners, again easy to see what is better. Even good manufacturers have cheap models and cheaper assmbly/support. Look for a table with multiple supports and quality fasteners. This increases the weight and sturdiness. Most companies offer a level warranty due to settling. I got 2 years warranty on leveling, one year on cloth and 10 years on slate and bumpers.

Wouldn't that be a 4x8 tabel, room should be 12x16?

I'd say, if you have the space to do it, make the room 16x20 and then there'll be space enough around for a ledge for drinks and everything else.

i got my Brunswick over ten years ago. 3 piece 3/4" slate. they had that thing in and set up and play'n on it in about an hour. i have never had a problem and she is still sitting perfect. you need at least 4' around it i have 2 poles in my basement holding up the second floor and they do get in the way for a few shots. but you learn to live with it and enjoy it.

Yes, I agree. I also have those 2 annoying poles in the basement as well. We have a 9' Pro Gold Crown Brunswick downstairs. Its 4 years old, but gets the job done 
I love the return pockets. We also have the short stick to get around the lost distance (I.E. - poles, some of the shorter distance walls, etc.). I LOVE it.

If the washer and dryer is close by pool tables make an excellent clothes sorting and clothes folding table/area. Thats what we did after the new wore off when I was a kid.
However I seldom paid for a cold beveage in my college years at the local pub. So my dad made a good investment buying that pool table. A shorty stick is a must in most home rec rooms. Hide it for personal use

oh yea i have me one of the 4' short cues but it takes some practice to shoot with that sucker. i'm still up in the air about the ball returns i really like the look of drop pockets kinda a classier look in my book.
