I keep buying the cheap ones and replace them every 6 months or so. I have one good pair of Sony that set me back like $15, but I only use them once and a while for "special occasions."
They're not cheap to buy, but the Bose Quiet Comfort 2s are amazing. I actually won them in a contest, but they are absolutely amazing. You don't even need to plug them into a source, and they make everything quieter. I took them onto an airplane, and couldn't take them off after I first heard the difference in how loud a plane was without those headphones. Amazing.
this is what I have been buying for the past few years. You can get a warranty with them, so that they can be replaced should you break them or whatever else happens. You either buy a 1 or a 2 year warranty.
Last pair I bought are COBY brand, look just like the old KOSS headphones I used to pay ~$25 a set for... These cost less than $10.. Sound is awesome, only drawback is they can't handle alot of power. They don't need a lot of power tho....
I use Sennheiser.. I bought them at Office Depot or somewhere like that for $45 and I've had them for 2 years. They get used every single day and still sound just as good as the day I bought them. I turn them up loud too.
These ones I have (COBY) are so loud with just my sound card they'll make your eyes water.. When the bass also distorts your vision you know you've got a good set..
If you're hanging around the house, the Sennheisers are the way to go.
If you're mobile, I like the earbud style. Usually pick up Sonys, but I look to see which unit has the highest dB rating for a given input. It better have at least 105 db rating to get my attention.
