In continuing my quest for a full size Bronco, I’ve come across a 96’ XLT w/ 302 - 118K, but very clean and dry underneath. A few minor cosmetic issues, nothing major. This is the first late model Bronco I’ve ever driven. The truck does not pull to one side or another, but there is a bit of “play” in the steering – so there is a little bit of wander, though not excessive. I’d guess I’d describe the steering as vague. Does this sound “normal” for a Bronco of this vintage / mileage? Anything I should be looking out for? One other oddity is the gear selector lever. It is very loose through its selections. Truck did shift fine on the test drive though (highway & residential streets). All thoughts are welcome.
I have a 95 EB with 138K miles, and it has the same "play" in the wheel you describe. I have a friend with a 97 F-150 that does the same thing. If you search through the posts here you'll see a lot of this. There are a lot of things you can try. I recently purchased a steering stabilizer for mine, along with new shocks. I'm also looking at replacing the bushing up front to see if that helps. I don't know a lot about most of the adjustments that you'll see in other threads on the topic, so rather than give you bad advice I'll let you read them for yourself!
For the loose shifter, have someone move it around while you look under the dash. On mine there were two bolts that were loose which caused the play in the gear selector. Just tighten them up and you should be good to go.
