theres always just one bolt that messes everything up. Ive got an 88 bronco with a 5.0. Anyone ever taken that upper intake manifold off before? because ive tried all the ways i can think of, and im not having any luck. its the one bolt on the passenger side in the middle. Gonna clean it out and get access to all the thermactor stuff in the back and its a little hard with that one bolt left. thanks for your replies!
Hehehehe! And its not at all like any of the rest of the bolts. Its a T-45 Torx if I am recalling correctly. Not only is it a Torx, but a regular Torx drive socket won't fit down between the runners of the plenum. I've heard all sorts of different approaches to this dilema. The best was probably a large flat screwdriver jammed in the head of the bolt and some serious torque applied with an adjustable wrench. No matter what you end up doing, its unlikely that it will EVER be troqued back down to factory specs. Good luck with it. Its the bane of anyone's existance who has ever attempted to remove the upper plenum.
Tape the torx bit to a socket and then to extentions. As for torquing it down, I doubt that you can get an accurate measurement. There are several posts regarding this bolt.
I got mine off with a long T-handled Allen wrench that I found in my father-in-law's tool box. Worked like a charm. Not sure where he got it and he doesn't remember.
Find the proper torx bit (I cant' remember the size if its a T-45 or a T14?) in a 1/4" socket size. Then buy a 1/4" extension (12"...anyway a long one) for your ratchet. You should have no problem accessing that PITA bolt from now on.
awesome thank you very much, aside from forgetting to remove the evap lines to the canister the rest of it went smoothly, getting a look at all the thermactor lines and the direcetional valve is apparently metled, is this common? the hoses are fine, but the plastic piece is long gone. thank you very much again for your help!
My thermactor control vale coroded and broke apart on the old engine. It is a bear to get to even with the upper plenium off! I pulled the whole engine anyways so it was not too bad for me.
A defective check valve is usually the cause of melted thermactor hoses - it's a small silver fitting with threads on one end and a hose nipple on the other. I think there are two. One prevents exhaust gas returning from the heads, and the other prevents gas returning from the catalytic converter. They're very inexpensive, and available from Ford or at the auto parts stores.
