DavidRichard,
Great News! Glade to hear all went well. What a creative solution! I have never seen anyone use heat tape to unfreeze an engine. This is one to store in the memory banks.
We had the same thing happen to a farm tractor, unfortunately, it was a Kobota. The cast iron head was so thin, it cracked and was a mess to fix.
Unlike foriegn vehicles, Ford uses more iron in their engines, so they can take some abuse. However, having had an engine freeze with no permanent damage make you one of the luckest guy I know. Perhaps you should consider purchasing a loto ticket?
Thanks for sharing your problem and fix with us. That's what's great about this website.

If I were you I'd get a forced circulation water heater installed on your truck, more commonly known as a Kat's heater. They are very popular on older tractors and can be had at any Farm and Ranch store.
They are a bit spendy and could be tough to install, but they are far superior to any other frost plug, and can get your engine toasty in about 30 min.
Napa sells what they call a "tank heater"...i guess it hooks into your heater hose, and it plugs in just like the block heater, but it warms and circulates your coolant at the same time, allowing a warm truck/heater, and an easier start...they run about 40 bucks, at the Napa here...
if your worried about the water pump blades breaking just remove the belt for the water pump & if it starts let it get up there in temp to thaw everything, then put the belt back.

My friend has one of them, it taps into the bottom rad hose (gotta make your own fitting) and into a heater hose, It doesnt actually circulate the coolant, theres no pump on it, it uses thermo circulation (or whatever the term is) to move hot water up and force the cold water down, just like the old wood stove water heater systems from 70 years ago, some people still have them in old cabins and such...
