I am doing an engine swap in a 97 Explorer. They guy that owns the vehicle lives about 100 miles away, and doesn't know a whole lot about cars. The Idea is to have a crate engine waiting, do the swap in one afternoon, and him drive it back same day. The only problem is he cant tell me if the Engine is OHV or OHC. I know the difference when I see them, but I cant really think of anything to tell him that would let him identify it. I tried asking him if the heads were wide of narrow. That was no help without having a reference for wide or narrow. Can anyone tell me an identifying feature that would be relatively easy for someone who knows very little about an engine to identify. The eighth digit in the vin is X. One engine supplier told me X designated OHC, the other supplier I used told me it Designated OHV and E designated OHC. Does anyone know for sure which is correct?
Thanks.
If I remember correctly the intake manifold on my SOHC said "SOHC" and the 4.0 says just "4.0 EFI". It should be clearly marked somewhere under the hood. It may be on the sticker under the hood too.
Have him email you a picture of it - that should let you id ID for certain....
I hope you're getting the engine wiring harness pcm, and maybe the under dash harness. Otherwise forget about doing the swap in a day.. let alone ever. You need the PCM, engine harness, and probably the underdash harness for it to work. I know because i just finished that swap two days ago into my 96.. however i was putting a SOHC explorer engine, into a ranger.. none the less, a OHV to SOHC swap is the same..
Good luck, and if you have any questions feel free to ask...as i have been there, and know all the problems you'll run into.

Actually we do have Private Messages but you have to have made at least 15 worthwhile posts before it's activated. It looks like you'll have to show up here more often
