Al, I think what BVFD1983 is saying is that every engine today has the valves overhead. Both OHC and pushrod engines put the valves at the top of the combustion chamber so technically, "OHV" is meaningless in differentiating between the two. Most of us have grown to accept what OHV means though.
It is not totally meaninless because many small equipment engines are still flathead. While OHC may be good for high rpms, pushrod, or OHV, engines produce plenty of power. The new Corvette Z06 will get 500hp from a 7.0L non-boosted pushrod engine. Dodge "Hemi" is another example. The Navistar diesel in the SuperDuties is no slouch either.
That is a mis-conception, they just don't add a blower or turbo. They rebuild the entire engine. Stock compression of the LS2 is 11 to 1. You can't add a blower or turbo with that type of compression unless you are going to run race fuel. So for about 7k you get 100 more HP and only 40lbs more torque.
I think its a simple matter of history. First, engines were "flat". Then the wonderful technology of over head valves came along. So, to differentiate the two, they called em OHV. Then, they decide to put the cams up top as well. So, to differentiate, they called it OHC. If there were only two types of engines (OHV and OHC) then OHV would be redundant. Since there are not, OHV is needed.
So, they said OHV to distinguish between it and flat head engines. Then OHC to distinguish from the other two.
