Could anyone tell me what could would make my front wheel drive kick in and out while the hubs are locked and under power? It makes a loud popping noise & seems to be when I really get down on it. Any help would be appreciated! Got some new pics in my album!! Check `em out!!

If you have the twin-I beam suspension, check the axle going to the passenger side wheel. Look up inside the beam and you will see a slip yoke like the one on the front driveshaft. Push on it and see if it has any play. These wear and can start slipping on the splines. If this is what the problem is, sorry to say, it means pulling that whole side down and buying a new axle and yoke.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Sep-02 AT 04:24 PM (EST)]I do have the twin I- beam front end. I checked it and yes I do have a little slack in the yoke and I can tell where the axle is rubbing the I-beam where it enters. But it don`t seam to have enough slack to be stripped splines. When I turn the axle by hand on the pass. side, the driver`s side moves as well. I don`t know what the tolerance is though. And the noise is coming from the passgr. side. Could it be my lock-in hub? They look pretty old. What about trying to find a straight axle to put in the front? Do you think that it would be worth my time and money to change? Do you think that it would cut down on maint. in the future? Would it even bolt up to my trans. case? Seems that it would be less u-joints and moving parts.Hey fellas thanks for all your help. You got me going in the right direction!!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Sep-02 AT 04:29 PM (EST)]Hey Mike, do you have a straight axle on your truck ,or do you have twin I- beams? The truck has leaf springs with about 1.5" of block under it.

I kind of had the exact same issue once before and the hub ( well both) needed rebuilding . At the time I got a kit from Warn , not sure if they are still available . I`m considering a straight axle swap on my 80 F250 also , more so because my Buddy stopped by this morning and scored a parts truck with a solid front . He said I could have the HD44 w/springs out of the front if I wanted it . I`m curious to know if the leaf springs bolt to the same mounts as the TTB springs are attatched to ? If you come across some good info. let me know and I`ll do the same for you .
Putting a whole axle assembly under your truck to fix your problem is a little dramatic, but I know where you guys are headed(a cheap lift). Here's an article from this website's tech section that may get you started.
Hey Jeff, you are talking about the manuel locking hubs right? Just making sure you`re not talking about the wheel hub itself. I just replaced the inner and outer bearings a few months ago. I`m on a mission now, so I`ll keep you informed on how it goes.
Franklin2 I`m not looking for the solid axle for the lift. I`m really looking for some durability. What do you think? Worth it? Thanks for all the input fella`s!! This is helping me!

He he he !!! Hey Jeff!! My hubs don`t have a name on them! Maybe that`s what`s wrong with them, huh? Well ,I believe I`m fixing to invest in me some Warn hubs and see what happens. Do you have leaf springs? Sounds like you got a good deal on the straight axle!!

Is the **** that turns plastic or metal . Actually if it was metal , the words WARN would be there . Ya , yesterday it was raining front straight axles . I`m going to have to do a ton of research on the swap . Every pic I see of this swap has those coil springs in the pic and thats confusing , I think only the the 150`s had the coils . Going to have to peek at a few F250`s (pre-79) around here and take a look at whats up . That kit I got linked to last night , that thing is $ 1800.00 , way to much in my opinion .
I`ll keep ya posted .
for durability and strength,a solid dana 60 would do the job and fit nice under there, the perches on a front 60 out of a 84-97 f-350 should fit, driveshaft will line up, you just have to fab a panhard bar mount, and some other details, this should also give you 2 more inches of lift. i have read a few swaps for this, and its not that hard, ill see if i can find one and that will take care of all the details, only thing that sucks is the front 60's for this application run about 800-1200 bucks used, u might want to try some warn hubs first, and see how long she lasts ;-)
WHEW!!! Man those things must be made out of gold!! Jeff the locks on my hubs are made of red plastic. There`s a place called Top`s Truck Center down from where I work. I`m going Friday to see what I can gather on some prices and a swap and see if it is the same rate as where you live. Hey Chris, I do believe that I will try the hubs first. I`ve been talking to some guys at work, and they`ve had some similar problems and that`s what they suggested. That`s a nice rig you got. I like that body style. What kind of shocks do you have on the back? Mine are shot and the back end sags a little and I can`t stand it! Some guys thinks it looks cool, but I think it sucks. Hard to see over the front. Anyway I know that a stock shock won`t fit because it`s not long enough. Thought about putting air shocks but I`d have to build some brackets or they won`t be long enough. Just wondering!! Hey good talking to y`all!! Later!!

If your rear is sagging , wouldnt it be the springs ?? Shocks only dampen the ups & downs I think I read your post right .
I like that guys ( Chris is it ? ) Ford , a beauty truck . Its what I looked for but just could not find one in decent enough shape . I just finished completely restoring an old CJ and that was enough for me for a while , didnt want to get into a complete resto right aways I`m quite happy with the 80 250HD I picked up , nice truck considering the funky TTB which aint all that bad ;-)
