I got a 00 excrusion, I just bought about 3 days. It has a 6.8 v-10 I am now the second owner. The X has 43,700 miles on it now and they are original and correct. The miles are very low which is what is giving me a hard time with trying to figure out this problem.
Here is the deal, the truck was bought in Texas last week and then driven to Ohio where I live (driven 22 plus hours straight driving time). This problem was noticed when picked up in Texas and still made the whole trip. When I got to stomp on the gas it seems to sputter. The airfilter is clean. It idles GREAT all the time. I can have gotten it up to about 80mph ONLY if I use the gas slowly and dont punch it. It has a hard time making it up hills. But it will take off from 0mph-20mph just fine if I punch the gas. Im not trying to thrash the truck I just got the truck and wanted to make sure it was ok. This is not a tranny problem as far as I can see cause it will sputter when in park if I rev it up. Also there are NO check engine lights on at all so I can not really run any codes on it I dont think. I am pretty well mechanically inclined and have went to school for automotive im only 21 and other than this very small problem.....I love this truck!!! I was a former ranger guy and I know those trucks like the back of my hand but the X is new to me and I thought I would put this post out there to see if anyone has experianced this problem. Any help would be great and im going to keep an eye on this forum site.
Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS I think its is a sensor, coil, spark plug or bad fuel filter problem. The miles are low and this truck has done its fair share of sitting. Also its a 4x4 if that helps
wow - out of the question to bring it back 2 the seller, isn't it ?
Where did u get it in Texus - I can go "suggest" he fix his broken legs and give you a call
not a v10 guy but u r on the right track...
can u call the seller and ask him what's wrong?
doesn't hurt to try...
know it's out of warranty (unless u got an extended one)
start @ the simplest thing...
suspect fuel - get some conditioner in there,
change fuel filters,
check plug/wires...
gas engines just need 3 things - air, fuel, and spark....
now they DO have to be at the right time and mixture, but focus in on the one most likely....
(maybe go by Autozone (or the like) they can chk codes for free and maybe give u some insight...)
good luck !

I had a E350 that I bought used. The previous owner ran the van on 93. If I ran the van on anything but 93 the car would sputter at low rpm(idle). We also found that we had a crumbling of the "honeycomb" in the catalytic converter, that was also part of the problem. The crumbling caused the truck when floored to sputter. The gas thing affected the truck when in low idle. What I assume is that a clogged fuel filter could have the same effect as a crumbling catalytic converter(clogged), in that it only causes the sputtering when under high demand, such as fast acceleration.

Yeah....I am now leaning towards the coil....or Fuel filter. I am not going to know until I replace the filter....but after I took it for about another quick 20 minute ride after writing the first post....I noticed I can step on the gas when its not all the way warmed up and it does not sputter as bad if at all. So either one of the coils are bad and I can not really notice it until the truck gets warmed up. Or the fuel filter is clogged in a strange way to where it will fill up with gas when its sits but when it gets low on fuel inside its straining to pull fuel out the tank. I did use some gum out stuff in the truck when it arrived in Ohio and I put a full tank of Sunoco fuel in it. I have kind of ruled out the sensor cause there are no engine lights on. But I will get them tested anyways cause you never know. Thanks for everyones input and I look forward to hearing more!!! Also the person I bought it from was a small family owned dealer.....I bought the truck off ebay too. Which is where I have bought all but one of the seven trucks I have had.
Hi guys found the problem.....well its a Texas truck....and pulled the plugs out and there was sand all over them....and it looked like dry mud on the boots of the COP's. Had to get the whole system flushed and new plugs.....Runs Like a champ now! I am just curious how it made the drive from Texas to Ohio like this....oh well.
I noticed when changing my spark plugs (5.4 V8) that there was a lot of sand in and around the spark plug holes. To make a long story short, I am having some issues now with sputtering, or chugging when accelerating. Usually happens around 40MPH - 50MPH range. Also idles abit rough, now. No codes, or vaccum leaks. Any advise on how to "flush" all of this sand out? Could this sand be the problem? I am in South FL...LOTS OF SAND!
I had misfiring on a mix of plugs on my v10, worst the codes reported it on 4 of them and have visited muliple repair shops. The last shop did the following-
-diagnistics showed no clear problem it could be all over the place.
-they checked the plugs, they proved not to be platinum- they changed them
-then the problem was down to one plug
-checked the coil - it proved that an old cooling system leakage had left a lot of stuff inside the coil
-they changed it and after 200 miles it still works fine...
so a warning is - it could easily be a combinatin of problems.

Mine is also a 5.4L (nice to see another 5.4 Excursion heeheehee... ) mine had the regular dust & what not but what I did to removed the dust, I used an air hose (or a can of air will work too) and blast the crap out before I removed the spark plug.

caddys83 is right on the money! The spark plugs on the V10 sit down in a hole which fills up with all kinds of crud over the miles. Always blow the depressions out thoroughly before removing the spark plugs. You don't want that stuff falling in your cylinders. I also think (my opinion) that this has something to do with reports of plugs blowing out after a change. It's impossible to achieve correct torque when tightening against dirt.
