We just got back from Disney World, a much needed vacation. It was an uneventful 1500 mile trip..... almost.
On the way home, about 250 miles to go, the car in front of me kicked up a piece of re-tread and it slapped up under my truck and somehow busted the rubber dust boot covering the drive-shaft spline. I cut the remains off and drove it home. Anyone know where I can get the boot, besides the dealer. I have a sinking feeling its gonna be an arm and a leg for the rubber dust boot.
I wouldn't get one from anywhere else but a dealer. I doubt it's an item that's available via the common auto parts stores. I've developed a good rapport with a parts guy at Bowditch Ford in Newport News, and I routinely get parts for much less than the listed/posted retail price. Then again, I've purchased a LOT of parts through them.
I don't get a flat rate discount. Some items are marked up a lot, so I'll get a good price break. Other items don't give them a lot of profit, so those don't get as much of a discount. They know I'll keep coming back, and talk good about them (like this post) to others. They need to make a profit, and I'm all for that, but they also don't gouge me.
Yeah, Ive got a good relationship with the parts guys over at Williamsburg Ford too, and usually get a discount too. Ive bought many vehicles from them. But still, the stealership is usually way out of their minds when it comes too price on simple items. I usually get a good discount on heavy duty repair items like control arms, big mechanical items, but smaller single items that they know you cant get anywhere else, they usually get you.
Well, I ordered the part from the dealership and was, quite honestly, shocked at the $20 price. I was expecting alot more. Maybe $20 is a bit high for a molded piece of rubber, but considering the grand scheme of dealer parts pricing, I'm glad its only $20.
