I bought an 05 F350, 4X4, DWD, crew cab King Ranch and it's the best vehicle I have ever owned. My wife drives an 00 Excursion with a 7.3 and this 6.0 will blow its doors away. Of course I went from a 92 mustang with nearly 200K, so it was a step up! It has 11K miles and the only thing I've done outside of regular maintenance is adjust the headlights. One thing I don't like is that the maintenance schedule in on 7.5K intervals instead of 5K interval like my Excursion. I think I will still go with a 5K schedule. 7.5K seems like a long time between oil changes.
The only "problem" is a phantom thumping sound every now and then. Can't seem to detect a pattern and it is barely noticable. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.
I have to ask. Got an 05 XLT and just found yesterday that there appears to be a light cover (red) on the doors, but they don't light up, at all. I haven't pulled it off to look, but figured I'd ask.

If it's a single thump, as opposed to a repetetive thumping, it is likely the air damper in the HVAC system closing. It's vacuum operated, and won't close until sufficient vacuum is built up by the pump. It's normal.
Try futzing with the A/C controls at idle and see if you can make it thump. Move from various vent/heat/defrost settings as well as fresh air/recirculate settings. I've never really noticed it in my 05, but others have reported this issue in theirs.
the thumping, if while shifting...is the transmission. my 04 ex did it and my 05 sd is doing it recently, 2x.
not sure if i should take it in, heard it was 'normal' clutch pack noise, also heard it was a noise leading to tranny failure, all on this site.
I've seen references to the thumping noise in another thread and I believe it to be what Russ described. Haven't heard it lately, so I tend to go with the air damper. I'll fiddle with the AC controls and see if it will thump.
