I know this belongs in the exhaust forum, I posted it there and got 1 reply. Has anybody attempeted to use a shorty header on these engines when mounted in the '77-'79 F150 4X4 pickups? Looking for good and bad feedback here. Thanks.
I could not even find shortly headers, but I was looking for 2x4, so I wasn't paying attention to much else. Plus with these trucks there is so much room down there, I just got the normal long-tube headers from Dynomax. I am installing them, with the rest of the engine, this weekend.
Why would you want shorty headers? I am not familiar with the difference between them and long-tube, other than one is short and one is long.
On the 4X4 trucks the transfer case fills up the space between the centerline of the trans and the left frame member. In order to have the headers and exhaust pipes survive the playing in the dirt and stuff everything needs to be up between the frame members. This means that the left header exhaust pipe has to cross under the transmission pan and then turn back and be routed between the transmission cross member and the bottom of the cab. Shorty headers are just that, short. Long tube headers make it difficult to make the bends because of the over length and they tend to hang down farther. I was thinking of trying a set made for something like a '70 Ranchero with a Cleveland engine.
That makes perfect sense. I thought it may be something like that, but without the 4x4 components underneath my truck, I have never faced that problem. Good luck with that and let us know how it works out.
I am now addicted to this website!! very first post, I have spent all my spare time under my 78 f-150 4x4 manual trying to get dynomax shorties to fit. Well the right side rubs the frame, the left side hits the fittings on the back of the power steering pump and is also dangerously close to the driveline, the clutch linkage springs need to be relocated and they dump out about 2 inches in front of the crossmember. I really don't want fenderwell exit as my beauty is a huntin', muddin', terrace jumpin' cow wrangler. so I need all possible range of motion. So my friendly Carquest guy is getting me a set of Holley Flowtech shorties for under $200 they should be in by the 26th so i will post back results sometime before the 2nd of Feb. as she has a date with the pipe bender.
...............You'll need to call Sanderson headers . They make a set of block huggers that worked great on my 77 Hiboy . They're NOT cheap but you're just wrestling with a 400 pound gorilla tring to install a set of full size headers on a 73-79 Ford truck IMO . sk
