first off, i love this site, gives me so much help!!!!
I have posted about changing my 351w (carbed) to TBI. I've gotten the feeling that TBI isn't that great. thanks. now i need some info on MPFI.
the kits i've seen cost 3,000 upward!! i'm not willing to spend that kinda of money! does anyone know of a cheaper kit (new) that i can get? i am willing to pull it off of a old bronco at a junk yard, but i have no idea what i need to pull! does anyone know what i need to pull off of it?
thank you very much for your time!
The Ford dealer has a pamphlet, it costs about $5, that describes what you need. It tells you howmuch harness you need, and where to cut it out of the donor rig. It is pretty handy for putting factory fuel injection in an older rig, so it will probably help you. I am using it to put FI on my 1962 F100, 302 / AOD.
Fortunately ford uses one big plug for the engine harness, over by the pass side fire wall. I would think you need that entire harness, all the sensors it plugs into, the intake manifold and plenum, and the other side of the harness, the part that runs through the fire wall, and the computer.
It also depends whether you are going to run a computer controlled transmission or not. What do you have for a trans? What do you want? OD or not?
That little book that n3vyk mentioned could be a lifesaver. definitely get it.
somthing that it might not have.....is the fuel pump. if its carburated u cant use the same pump. not enough pressure so either get a new one or take it off the donor rig.
i currently have a c-6. which isn't computer controlled. so will efi still work on my vehical? i was going to put in an AOD but i heard the c-6 is extremely reliable and will outlast the vehical, so i'll more then likly be keeping the c-6, since i'm getting bigger tires that will bring down my rmps enough on the freeway too! so will efi still work on my non-computer 351?
If your donor vehicle has a manuel trans would be the easiest, that way there is no trans harness hooked into the engine harness. Or an older F/I donor with a non-electric control trans, but I'm sure that even if your donor has elec trans, there is a way to not use that part of the harness, but I'm not sure what you would need to do. Maybe someone can shed light here?
Even though your trans is not computer controlled, you will need the speed sensor. It hooks on where the speedo cable enters the trans. Even the standard trans rigs have the sensor. The computer will need input as to what speed you are going. Once again, it is all spelled out in the booklet from Ford. Also remember to calibrate the speedo. I used a GPS to get the speed, and then changed the gear on the cable to compensate.

It doesn't matter if the harness comes out of a vehicle that has an E4OD, if you are using a C-6 then just get a computer out of a truck that had anything but an E4OD and don't worry about the connector for the trans because the computer isn't looking for it. The VSS is on the transfer case on most of the newer ones not the trans. They could've been on the trans at some point but I don't know.
