shift pattern (3 on tree)

Hey guys,

I just bought a 77 f100 on ebay last night. I'm hoping to pick it up this weekend.

It's got a 3 on the tree, and I've never used one before. I'm wondering if someone can give me a quick rundown on how to even shift one of these bad boys. I searched the forum, and all over the net, and couldn't find anything about where the gears are. I hope the guy will be able to show me, but I don't have all that much faith in him.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

to you and up is Reverse, to you down is 1st, up over up is 2nd, straight down from 2nd is 3rd. That is what I had before the NP 435 and it was kinda cool.
good luck. R-2

Man, that was fast, thanks!

This is a pretty active forum.

EDIT:

Here's the truck I bought. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a pile!

Looks like a nice truck. The 300 is a great engine, not fast, but very dependable, and gobs of torque.

Well, about 2 weeks ago, I was driving my supercharged grand prix down the road, and someone in a lexus caused an accident that totaled both cars. No one was hurt, but airbags and engines and axles were wasted.

I've got two other cars, but one of them has no mechanical components in front of the firewall at the moment (85 Dodge 600ES Turbo 'vert) and the other is my turbo minivan.

The van was is a great car, but not as my sole mode of transportation. So, I'm picking up this truck.

Should be fun, I've always been a big fan of ford trucks. I've had a late 80s ranger as my first car, a 85 f150 4x4, and a 94 lightning so far. My dad used to have a 79 f150 4x4 with a i6 and a manual, and I've been a big fan of the styling ever since.

So, should be fun. I'll tell you what...I'm a big fan of support forums when owning a rig that will need work, and this forum looks fantastic so far!

Is it the same for a 1963 Mercury M100 with a 292? Just about to pull mine out of the yard after a 1 year restore.

I can't say definitively, having never driven an M100, but the good news is that probably 99% of 3-speed column shifters out there had the same pattern. If not 100%? Just feeling there must've been variations over the years, but I've never seen one on a fifties or newer US designed car or truck.

Funny, but even having said that I still "test feel" any column shift I sit behind before driving it. You can certainly get a feel for the basic pattern, and with some transmissions you can even tell if it's Reverse or a Forward gear that it's going into. Then with the engine running you can tell if it's synchronized or not. Most, if not all transmissions of the era had non-syncrho reverse gears, but some had non-synchro first gears too.

So basically as you can tell it's easy to figure out once you get behind the wheel. Just don't jam it into a position and pop the clutch until you know!
Hope that helps, but let some others comment with their experiences as well.

Good luck and have fun!

Paul

Be sure to check the FAQs/tips/tricks and the information and then some stickies. They are well worth the time reading. They will save you time and money and definitely give you some ideas you might not think of.

I copied what applied to me and started a document to make them easier to find.

Think of a "H" with
1st at bottom left,
2nd at top right,
3rd at bottom right,
and reverse at top left.

Now stick that image on the side of the steering column.

Use the clutch.

You think he got it after 15 years? Maybe he just gave up after a few minutes and stuck it in a barn.
