I have a 390 with a 3 on the tree. I know somebody who told me he would trade me a C-6 for mine. What do you guys run behind your FE's?
NP435 4 speed now, probably a Richmond 5-speed later. The right tranny and gearing can make all the difference in how your truck performs. It all comes down to what you want it to do.
Debestuss - I grew up with Fords and have run 3 and 4 speeds, C4 and C6s. When I was younger automatics were not as good as the C6, and we believed a stick was the best.
Over they years I have changed - an automatic will start a heavier load, and allow you to ease through rough country where a stick will burn the clutch or make you bounce across rocks and the like. Backing a trailer is much easier with an automatic.
I have had a C6 for more than 30 years and have yet to have a problem. When I work it, I monitor the temp of the oil and back out of it when the temp starts to increase. I have never had a failure.
With shift kits and other modifications the C6 will out shift a stick - hands down. And it never misses a shift or drops out the clutch.
I have seen people say that the C6 soaks up power (up to 60 horses, as posted by one member) and there are a few who find the gear ratios do not match what they need - and I do know they cost you a bit in MPG.
In the end it comes down to what you want to do with your truck -
However, IMO, in anything but all out racing I would go with the C6.
I forgot to add that for our younger members, you can drive one handed and do not have a floor mounted gear shift in the way, should your date wish to sit close!

I would add, that in addition to, "it all comming down to what you want to do", It also comes down to how much you want to spend.
Okay, thanks. I won't be racing. I drive her mostly around town, back and forth to work. Hardly ever sees anything over 60mph. I want a tranny that'll give me something off the line at red lights. I run a 3:25 rear end which is not too bad. The guy wants to trade even, mine for his, and wants me to drive his truck so I can see how this C-6 performs.
For around town the MPG difference between the 3 sp and the C6 would be barely noticeable, I think. You would get better off the line performance with your gear ratio and not have to shift the manual trans.
This is coming from a guy with a 12 speed manual trans pickup!!!
Keep in ming the "other stuff" you will need to convert a standard transmission to automatic. For starters your crossmember is riveted in and you will need to remove all the rivets 8 I think and drop the crossmember. The transmission crossmember mount is different and the crossmember may be as well. Driveshaft and radiator are different and you will need to run coolant lines. Accelerator kick down linkage is different as is shifter and steering column. Please don't hack a hole in the floor for one of those gyppo floor shifters. Since you no longer need the clutch you will need to remove that and plug the hole in the floor where the linkage went through. Be prepared for a big PITA! Worth it when done properly, IMHO.
