I have a 1996 Ford F150 XLT 4X4 Excab. I have noticed the paint bubbling (rusting) around the rear quarterpanel wheel openings. What can be done to stop this ? Is this a common problem with Fords. I have also seen other Fords rusting in the same location. Thanks for any info
I've got a 96 reg cab xlt with the same problem. I took it to my body man and he take care of it while it is surface rust or it'll be twice the cost later. So, I'm doing mine within the next month or so. Otherwise my body is in great shape.
This is a very common area for rust on any truck. Other areas are cab corners, bottom of doors, bottom of tailgate, lip of front fender. List goes on and on. If you live in an area that uses salt on the road like me, in michigan, then your truck is going to rust if you drive it in the winter. My 95 F150 has the rust in the same spot, same with my dads 92 F150 and my old 82 F100. If you can keep ahead of the rust by fixing it and treating it from coming back thats good, but the best thing if you don't want the rust is to keep them off the roads in the winter. Anywhere you have a seam with spot welds that water and salt can get between is where it will pop with rust. Since I use my 95 F150 as my daily driver is a losing battle against the rust. Good Luck Fred
If rust were gold I'd be a millionaire. Over the wheel wells is about the only place my truck did'nt have rust. Mine is a 65' F 100 , but the floors, cab corners and cab mounts were shot. I'm starting to win the battle and have it just about rust free. I think they started rusting over the wheel wells sometime after 66'. My 78' Ranger XLT is starting to rust there and I had a 69' & 70" that rusted.
Thanks for the replies guys,,,,,, but what is Ford doing, using steel from Japan? I'm sure they could have fixed that problem! Do Chevys have the same rust problem? I have seen more Fords with rust then I do the Chevys. Maybe I should have gotten a Chevy!
It all depends on how you take care of your truck and where you live. If you regularly clean and inspect the trouble areas you can catch things before they start rusting. Not saying that you don't, but any steel you put on a truck that is going to go through a MN or ND winter will rust no matter what. Not because it is wet, but because the area where wet meets dry is in locations that don't get regular cleanings. Rust is an equal opportunity sorta thing.
